Spamming is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to indiscriminately send unsolicited bulk messages. While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media: instant messaging spam, Usenet newsgroup spam, Web search engine spam, spam in blogs, wiki spam, Online classified ads spam, mobile phone messaging spam, Internet forum spam and junk fax transmissions.

Spamming remains economically viable because advertisers have no operating costs beyond the management of their mailing lists, and it is difficult to hold senders accountable for their mass mailings. Because the barrier to entry is so low, spammers are numerous, and the volume of unsolicited mail has become very high. The costs, such as lost productivity and fraud, are borne by the public and by Internet service providers, which have been forced to add extra capacity to cope with the deluge. Spamming is widely reviled, and has been the subject of legislation in many jurisdictions.[citation needed]

Persons who create electronic spam are called spammers

To me at least, spam is anything that is posted, mailed or even hosted that is done without consideration for other people.

Good forums (like this one) work because there is very little junk. Most people make considered replies so they tend to be WORTH READING. Lets say you are reading a good thread on English football, do you really want to see a reply that points you to some obscure adult website? That to me is the electronic equivalent of "(*$^@*( $^$_*(@%_*% @$&@%_", and thus, to me at least, is SPAM.

To a lesser degree, I would also agree that simple replies like "thank you", "woot!", "thanks for sharing", etc are spam. They dont add any value to the thread and just gets in the way of people who REALLY want to enjoy the thread. If you feel a need to say thanks, please click on the RED HEART at the top to show your support. That is good for both the poster and yourself. AND it doesnt get in the way, hehe.

The easiest way to avoid spamming is actually very simple. Reply with YOUR heart. Put some effort into it. If you are trying to express yourself and what you feel sincerely, people will always read it.
